Intuitive Eating Principle: Reject the Diet Mentality
Dieting triggers overeating and a feeling of failure
every time a new diet stops working and weight goes up.
If you are like most of my clients, the idea of not dieting or following some food rules can be scary. Yes, you can diet and temporarily lose weight. However, diet is ineffective and is actually associated with physical and psychological harm, including:
increased weight gain and abdominal fat
decreased metabolism
increased binge eating
increased cravings and preoccupation with food
increased risk of premature death and heart disease
increased risk of developing an eating disorder
increased stress and feelings of failure
lowered self-esteem
social anxiety and loss of control over eating
Psychologists John P. Foreytt a, d G ken Goodrick created the above Dieter’s Dilemma model. It showcases the cycle of dieting. ( aka yo-yo dieting) To break these unhealthy cycles it is necessary to build a healthy relationship with food and our bodies.
Awareness and self-compassion are the first steps to stopping the diet mentality and starting to eat consciously.
Here are empowerment tools that support self-reflection
